Children's Hospital

I never thought I would be sharing a post with this title. But at just over 2 months Micah wanted to take a tour of Children's Hospital and spend a few nights so he decided seizures were the way to get there.

To catch you up...on Tuesday, April 5, I was at work and Micah was asleep on the floor. He startled himself awake like many babies (including himself) do, but it didn't end there. His eyes went up and his arms got real stiff. It lasted about 30 sec. It was the weirdest thing. We had his 2 month check up and shots the next day so I figured we would just wait until then and I would ask our doctor about it. I almost decided not to say anything. But I put my big girl panties on and mentioned it. Our doctor said it was probably nothing but to be on the safe side lets not get any shots today. She was on call that night and told me to call if anything else happened. I scooted home to let our dogs out and then Micah and I headed to Brian's soccer game. After the game was over, Brian was holding him and he started doing the same thing (this was about 7:00pm). Coincidence I thought. So we go home, eat dinner, sitting on the couch and there he goes again at about 9:30 pm. I was done with coincidence, we called the answering service and the doctor called us back and told us it was time to head to Children's. It was now 10:00 pm and man was Children's PACKED!

Here is Micah in the waiting room. I wish I was getting to do a little sleeping. We sat in the waiting room for 2 hours before we got called back. So now it is Midnight. And guess what we did when we got called back...yep we waited another 2 hours. Now it was 2:00 am. We finally get some attention. Lots of needles and pokes, and questions and rehashing all that has happened.
(Little did I know that our doctor had woken up about 2:00 am and called to check on us. When they told her we hadn't been seen I think she got a bit upset. Maybe we would have sat there longer...Thank you Dr. McCain)

This was just after the first round of sticks...poor guy. Little did he know what was ahead of him.

Protocol for 2 months and younger is to do a spinal tap. Since he was so close they decided it would be a good idea to check for infection. They numb his back so the sticks aren't so bad. But holding a 2 month old still is torture to them. He screamed so much, he was eventually hoarse. This was just afterwards, he got a bottle and all was right in Daddy's arms.

Finally around 6:30 am we got taken up to the Special Care Unit. When we came in this is how he was all swaddled and passed out. He was a trooper, but by now he was pooped. In this unit they have hours they are closed. When we got moved up there was during a closed period, but they let us stay for about 20-30 minutes.

We then left, drove to Brian's school to leave sub plans, headed home to shower and head right back to be there when the unit opened back up. We stayed with him most of the day and eventually he had a seizure around lunch time. The plan was to get him hooked up to an EEG machine so they could catch them on video and on the machine.

When we got back to the unit after another closed time he was all hooked up, and they told us we couldn't hold him. Oh that was so hard. But if he was to have an episode he needed to be where the video would get it. We understood, but when your baby is in trouble you want to hold them close.

As much as it pained us, he was doing ok. Babies are so resilient. He ended up having 3 more seizures while he was hooked up the EEG machine. I am not glad he had seizures but at least they got some information to work with.

Finally got to hold him!

Started medicine Friday night about 8 pm. Finally got to a room Friday night at 10 pm.

Saturday mid day we busted out!

We have an MRI scheduled in May. We have had to up the medicine twice since we have been home due to some small seizures. But as of today we are officially seizure free for 1 week. Woo hoo! Baby steps!

2 months

I know I am very behind at blogging. Micah turned 2 months on March 30th. Micah and I shared a birthday this month. He turned 2 months and I turned the big 3-0!
